Description

Howden is a global compression solutions provider with over a century of experience in designing and supplying equipment for critical industrial processes. The company holds a prominent position in screw compressors, with a consolidated offering in demanding oil & gas, petrochemical and energy applications, where reliability, efficiency and adaptability to the process gas are decisive factors.

Screw compressors are based on volumetric gas displacement using helical rotors, allowing operation with high stability while handling flow rates practically independent of pressure within their operating range. One of their main advantages is that they operate at relatively low tip speeds, reducing sensitivity to erosion phenomena associated with small quantities of liquid or particles in the gas stream. This characteristic improves equipment durability and reinforces reliability under severe service conditions.

Unlike dynamic compressors such as centrifugal compressors, screw compressors do not exhibit aerodynamic instability phenomena such as surge, thus offering stable operation across their entire operating range. This makes them a suitable alternative for processes with variations in inlet conditions, gas composition or system demand. They can therefore efficiently handle gases of variable molecular weight and fluctuating compositions, maintaining reliable performance even when operating conditions are not constant.

Howden offers both lubricated (oil-injected) and oil-free compressors, covering a broad spectrum of operational requirements. Lubricated units are distinguished by their robustness and good performance in severe services, such as hydrocarbon vapours, process gases or vapour recovery. Oil-free compressors are essential when gas purity is critical.

One of Howden’s differentiating elements is its ability to supply complete engineered packages, particularly oriented towards oil & gas projects, with compressor, auxiliaries, controls, instrumentation and driver integrated on skid. This approach reduces integration risks, facilitates commissioning and reinforces its positioning as a strategic partner in complex compression projects.
