Reciprocating piston compressors (HTC)
Description

Howden Thomassen is the Howden group’s reference in the development and manufacture of reciprocating piston compressors, with the capacity to cover a wide range of flow rates, pressures and configurations for hydrogen and process gases. Its offering targets critical applications in refining, chemical, petrochemical and energy industries, where mechanical reliability, operational flexibility and design robustness are essential.

Howden Thomassen positions its API 618-compliant reciprocating compressors as a key technology for H₂ make-up, recycle, hydrogen storage and vapour or off-gas recovery services. These are applications where compression must be carried out with a high level of safety, stability and efficiency, even under demanding conditions and with gases of high sensitivity or strategic value within the process. Thanks to their customisation capability, these units can be precisely adapted to the real pressure, flow rate and configuration requirements of each installation.

In terms of performance, Howden Thomassen can supply large-scale equipment, with power outputs of up to 33 MW, pressures of up to 600 bar and rod loads of up to 1,800 kN. This range allows addressing both conventional services and high technical demand projects, where bespoke solutions and maximum availability guarantees are required. One of its differentiating elements is the patented Free Floating Piston (FFP) technology, designed to provide completely oil-free compression. This feature is particularly valuable in hydrogen and high-purity gas applications, while also contributing to reduced ring wear, optimised mechanical behaviour and extended maintenance intervals.

At the engineering level, Howden Thomassen offers both foundation-mounted units and skid-integrated packages, including control, regulation and auxiliary systems. This approach reduces interface risks, accelerates installation and simplifies commissioning. With its extensive installed base and track record in hydrogen compression, Howden Thomassen has established itself as a trusted technology partner for complex projects, both in traditional refining and in new renewable hydrogen initiatives linked to the energy transition.

Other Features

The FFP (Free Floating Piston) technology from Thomassen is a proprietary solution for reciprocating compressors in which the piston is supported on a thin film of pressurised process gas, rather than through conventional mechanical contact with wear elements.

This principle virtually eliminates rider ring wear, keeps the piston centred in the cylinder and extends the service life of piston rings and packing, also reducing the need for lubrication.

For the user, this translates into less preventive maintenance, fewer shutdowns, higher availability and reduced risk of gas contamination, with the additional advantage that it can also be applied as a retrofit on existing compressors.

In hydrogen applications, this technology is particularly valuable because Howden has incorporated it in renewable H₂ compression projects, highlighting that the gas-film support eliminates rider ring wear and extends maintenance intervals — a key factor when seeking to operate with high reliability and no redundant capacity.
